Keeping Your Work and Mind Organized in a Cyber Environment

Jill Shomper, ISD Tech Developer

We all know that life can get busy. With work, friends, obligations, deadlines…it’s easy to get distracted by all that life has to offer, both at a home school in PA or a traditional school. And when working and learning in a cyber environment, it is easy to get caught up in managing both worlds at the same time. But the good news is that keeping your life organized doesn’t have to be difficult. The word “organization” might bring up certain images in your mind– maybe of your grandma’s kitchen cabinets or TV shows about folding socks in just the right way to maximize drawer space. That can seem daunting. But there are some simple ways to get organized in all aspects of your life and to help make the most of your day and your time.

DeskTOP Priority

Learning in a virtual school environment, you may realize that you have multiple “desks.” You may sit at a desk to work or use a table or your lap. Whatever your workspace situation, you can easily optimize your space. Clutter on your computer desktop can be just as stressful as papers and books on a physical desk.

Outer clutter can increase your inner clutter. It can be overwhelming to see papers or documents scattered around. Keeping your desktops organized will allow you time to find what you are looking for, leading to a more productive day and a less stressful outlook. Practice keeping your school things together in one place, either in a backpack or shelf or digitally in a folder or drive. Using a routine naming system when saving your work will make it easier to locate when you need it.

Did you know? Have you ever opened your laptop or minimized the windows and noticed that everything you have downloaded over the past week is scattered across your desktop like confetti at a party? You can “Stack” the icons on your computer desktop? On your desktop, click View > Use Stacks. This will organize all of those little icons and thumbnails into labeled folders for instant and easy storage!

Keep Tabs on Tabs

The phrase “open in a new window” is fairly common in a cyber environment. You can click an assignment and see both the new material and what you are currently working on simultaneously. Anything you need is right in front of you– until everything is in front of you. Having multiple windows and tabs open can be distracting. You can misplace assignments, lose your place, or forget about tasks that are hidden in minimized windows. Try to make a habit of closing out of things you no longer need.

This practice can go for your mind, too. Think about all of the mental tabs you have running in your brain at any given time. You are focused on your schoolwork, but you also have ‘tabs’ up in your mind with work, shopping lists, and people to text back…bring your most important and time-sensitive tabs to the front of your mind and ‘close’ the rest. The others will be there when you need them later.

Did you know? You can organize your tabs in Chrome and group them! Right-click on a tab and select ‘Add to a new group.’ Then, you can name the group category, give it a fun color, and add other tabs to that group later on. You can open and close the tab groups to provide your window more space and be able to find your tabs more easily!

You can also pin tabs. Right-click on a tab and select ‘Pin”. This will keep that tab in the same spot, and it won’t get lost. (Helpful Hint: pin your calendar! Use your calendar to block off time to do tasks throughout the day. Remember to add some time for yourself, too. You can schedule your top school tasks, but also schedule breaks for a snack, a walk outside, or some social media time.

Dual-y Noted

With busy schedules both at home and in cyber school, sometimes a little reminder is all you need! There are many ways to keep track of these reminders, including a classic: a sticky note.

The sticky note is nothing new, but it can be the helpful reminder that you need. However, you need it. A traditional sticky note, an actual piece of paper, can be constructive when you have something you cannot forget to do. Stick it to your laptop, phone, or the front door: anywhere you will see it and not overlook it.

Sticky notes have been so popular that Apple has been incorporating them into their computers since 1994! You can use the Stickies App on your Macbook to add digital sticky notes to your desktop. Search for the Stickies App in your search bar at the top of your screen and get started making notes that will stay on your desktop.

Whether you use traditional paper sticky notes, the Stickies App, or a combination of both, make sure that the note is located where you will see it and check back on it. It will get that reminder off of your mind but still in sight when you are ready.

Did you know? If you hover over the title of your Stickies note on your desktop, you can see when the note was created and edited. Make it part of your daily routine to check to see if these notes are outdated, completed, or need to be revisited. Once they are done, you can remove the note and check it off of your list and out of your mind!

Embracing the Future: The Benefits of Cyber School from a Parent’s Perspective

Mother is assisting son with cyber/online school work.

In today’s world, where technology has transformed every aspect of our lives, parents now have more options than ever when it comes to their child’s educational path. With traditional schooling not being a one-size-fits-all solution, many parents are turning to cyber schooling. As the popularity of cyber school continues to grow, it’s important to explore the benefits of this modern approach to education from the perspective of parents.

This blog aims to delve into these benefits, highlighting how cyber schooling can be a game-changer for children and why it’s worth considering as a viable educational option. From the flexibility it offers to the personalized learning experience, there are several advantages that cyber school can provide to both parents and students alike.

Flexibility and Customized Learning: One of the biggest advantages of attending a cyber charter school is its flexibility. Unlike traditional schools with fixed schedules, online learning allows students to learn at their own pace. This can be especially helpful for children who may require more time for certain subjects or excel in others. This personalized approach ensures that each child receives an education that is tailored to their individual needs and learning styles, making them feel valued and recognized.

Safe and Comfortable Learning Environment: With the increasing cases of bullying and other school-related problems, cyber schools have emerged as a safe and secure haven for children. This environment is especially beneficial for children with special needs or social anxieties so that they can learn without the fear of bullying or peer pressure. Moreover, learning from the comfort of their homes helps children focus better and engage more with the study material. Parents have more control over their child’s social interactions by having them attend a cyber school.

Access to Diverse and Advanced Courses: Cyber schools tend to offer an exceptionally wide range of courses, including advanced placement classes, diverse language options, and specialized subjects. This access to a broader curriculum can ignite a child’s passion for learning and expose them to topics and ideas that they might not encounter in a conventional classroom setting.

Developing Technological Skills: In a world where technology is ever-evolving, cyber schooling ensures that children are not left behind. By navigating online learning platforms, participating in virtual classrooms, and utilizing various digital tools, students inherently develop strong technological skills that will be invaluable in their future careers.

Cost-Effective and Time-Saving: Cyber schooling is a cost-effective alternative to traditional schooling, eliminating many of the costs associated with expensive school supplies. Cyber schools such as 21st Century Cyber Charter School will even provide students with school supplies, iPads, MacBooks, calculators, PhysEd, and science kits, resulting in overall significant savings. Moreover, students can save time on commuting, which can be better used for extracurricular activities or spending time with family.

For parents, one of the most important responsibilities is to ensure that their child receives a quality education. While traditional schooling works for some, there are plenty of reasons to consider upgrading one’s educational future by making the decision to sign up for the best cyber school in Pennsylvania.

What Are Common New Year’s Resolutions for Students at Cyber Schools in PA?

Cyber Schools in PA boy on laptop

The start of a new year is an important time for students at cyber schools in PA. Not only does it give them the chance to evaluate what is working for them as they build towards their learning goals, but it also provides the opportunity to build on aspects of their academic careers that they feel could use some improvement.

Cyber school students often create New Year’s Resolutions to help keep them on track as they continue on the path of their learning goals. Here, 21CCCS explores a few of the most common resolutions for students as well as how students can work towards making them a reality.

Building Strong Connections with Students and Teachers

One common New Year’s resolution for cyber charter school students is to build strong connections with fellow students and staff. After all, any school experience is enhanced when you know that you fully take advantage of the support of your classmates and teachers.

As one of the leading cyber schools in PA, 21CCCS recognizes that keeping students fully engaged on their learning paths is much easier when they can foster strong connections with others. For some students, this means venturing out of their comfort zones a bit by reaching out if they have questions or need any clarification on their coursework. 21CCCS teachers have live teaching sessions weekly and are available in their virtual offices from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for live support every weekday, giving students ample opportunities to build strong, lasting connections with them as they progress through the course.

Enhancing Learning Spaces

21CCCS maintains that students’ learning spaces- the area of their homes where they work on their coursework- play an important role in keeping them connected during remote learning. With that being said, no learning space is perfect, and students frequently want to enhance their environment to best fit their personality, individualized learning needs, and improve access to materials they need the most throughout the day.

Luckily, there are several ways that they can go about it with the help of their parent or guardian. For example, one of the simplest ways to improve a learning space is to make materials needed for class easy to access from their desk. This is because spending too much time looking for class materials can break focus and make learning less immersive overall. There are other ways to build on a learning space as well such as letting students add personal touches and helping the area feel more comfortable.   Working on a Well Structured Schedule

21cccs calendar

Work for cyber charter school courses can usually be completed at any time of day during the week, meaning that students have a lot of freedom when building their daily schedules. Still, some students may have had an experience with leaving work until the last minute only to be stressed when it is time to turn it in. This leads to them establishing a New Year’s resolution to set a schedule for completing work that best sets them up for success.

Teachers at 21CCCS and other cyber schools in PA guide students in their progress through assignments. Lessons and assignments are divided into sections and are set up to be viewed in a particular order. While this certainly helps students break lessons up into manageable pieces, they still have the freedom to decide what times work best to complete them- as long as they are completed by their deadlines. Naturally, students will want to schedule their work in ways that allow them to finish lessons without undue stress. Prioritizing working on a schedule that provides enough time for each class is a great way to start the new year.

Getting Support from Parents or Guardians

Cyber schools may provide students with a lot of freedom to work at their own pace, but they will still need support from others in their circles much like any student in a traditional school environment would. For most this means that their parents or guardians will want to play an active role in ensuring that they are on track on their learning paths and feel as though they are equipped to deal with any potential obstacles along the way.

Cyber charter school students often base their New Year’s resolutions around having the support necessary to be set up for success throughout the remainder of the school year. There are many ways that a student may seek out support from members of their household. For example, maybe they would like mutual reading time, want to improve their learning space, or would like a system for quiet time while they are working. Empowering your student to ask for help when needed will not only keep them prepared for school but also provides the opportunity to build on your connection as a key part of their support system.

21st Century Cyber Charter School Breaks Down the Benefits of Online Education

21CCCS

In 2020, many in-person schools were forced to transition to an online-learning model in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social distancing orders. However, while some parents and educators were concerned about how the change would affect students’ learning, many families found that online learning, in fact, improved their child’s education and provided a variety of unexpected benefits. As a result, educators have seen many American families elect to keep their children in online learning programs even after social distancing protocols ended. 21st Century Cyber Charter School is thrilled to see online education highlighted in the public eye and hopes to share online education’s many benefits with other families considering the learning model for their children.

Strong Technical Skills

In an increasingly digital world, the importance of technical skills in the workplace cannot be overstated. Strong technical skills will be a major factor in employability and a necessity in nearly all industries for the next generation. An online education builds the foundation for strong technical skills, as it enables and encourages students to become familiar with a variety of tools, software, and troubleshooting strategies. Students with extensive experience in collaboration tools, content management systems, numerous programs, and basic coding skills will be viewed as excellent candidates for the majority of hiring managers.

Personalized Curriculum for Unique Learners

At traditional brick-and-mortar schools, students must match the learning pace of their classmates and read through the class textbook at a fixed schedule. While this approach may work for some students, students with different learning preferences might prefer to run ahead of their schedules and finish the work earlier, or students with learning disabilities who fall behind and struggle with their coursework might choose to take time and slowly progress. The traditional learning method can lead to many bright students feeling frustrated within the classroom or losing confidence in their learning abilities. Virtual schools and online learning offer students more educational opportunities such as flexible scheduling, personalized curriculum, and one-on-one instruction, which allow students to set their own pace when it comes to their education and improve their chances of succeeding!

Help Cultivate Independence

Unlike in-person learning, online learning puts the onus on students to take charge of their education. Many of the benefits of online learning also give students additional responsibilities when it comes to their education. For example, online learning allows students to set their own school schedules. While this is a significant benefit for many families, it also means that there will be no bell telling students where they need to be at what time. This teaches students time management and organizational skills that they will be responsible for their own educational success and know the importance of scheduling and planning.

Mrs. Williams, a 21CCCS student parent, found this to be especially true and, in an online forum, stated, “I am so glad we found 21CCCS during the pandemic. While other schools learn how to teach children with virtual education, I choose the experts. The school taught me a lot about my child and her capabilities. She became a very independent learner, something she will have to rely on being in college, and she was inducted into the National Honor Society.”

21st Century Cyber Charter School Celebrates the Class of 2021!

Class of 2021

21st Century Cyber Charter Schools is proud to announce the graduation of the Class of 2021!

The ceremonies celebrated the 50 students that graduated this January along with the school’s 204 June graduates. Featuring remarks from Interim CEO/ Director of Curriculum, Brian Cote, several student speakers, and a presentation of the class by principal, Monica Frank, the school was proud to organize such successful ceremonies for its graduates.

21CCCS recognizes that the 2020-2021 school year included a variety of challenges for students, but the school’s community has done an excellent job looking after the needs and wellbeing of its members. Due to low case numbers in Pennsylvania at the time of graduation, 21CCCS was able to host in-person graduation ceremonies to the excitement of students and faculty. It was a joyous occasion to see the 21CCCS community share this moment after a long year of putting in-person events on hold!

For the events, 21CCCS had three student speakers share their insights with the graduating class and their loved ones: Mikenna Katarski, Lizbeth Rivera, and Grayson Hale.

Makenna Katarski- who spoke at the Murrysville ceremony- provided a touching summary of the difficulties that students faced during the pandemic, underscored with hope for the future.

“…lockdown was a daunting task for many of us. But while the world was ablaze with uncertainty and brawls over toiletries, I found my escape through US History, Creative Writing, British Literature, and my supportive interactions with teachers and staff.

It was also in these solitary moments however, that I came to the decision of choosing a career in teaching myself, a choice that I attribute greatly to the kindness, generosity, and friendship that was shown to me at my time with 21st Century Cyber Charter School.”

Grayson Hale, at the King of Prussia ceremony, gave an excellent speech on the ways that National Honor Society and 21CCCS community gave him the tools to assist others. Hale detailed the volunteering that he had the opportunity to facilitate during the pandemic. Last summer, he organized an event called the “Puppy Parade”, where he and 30 friends and family walked around a local nursing home with dogs to entertain residents.

All the student speakers noted how much the 21CCCS community assisted with their development as students and individuals as they begin their next adventures. Makenna maintains that her three years at 21st Century Cyber Charter School included unfathomable growth that she will pay forward to the next generation of learners as a teacher herself. Grayson shared a touching tidbit about how his teacher, Mr. Chu, made the trip to see two of his musicals- teaching him a valuable lesson about showing up for others. Lizbeth’s remarks, similarly, spoke to how the support of the 21CCCS community empowered to pursue her goals.

Monica Frank and Brian Cote’s remarks to the graduating class included words of both encouragement and congratulations. “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”, Monica Frank stated to graduates citing Henry David Thoreau.

The 21CCCS community is incredibly proud of what the class of 2021 was able to accomplish this year. Despite the uncertainties of the pandemic, students were able to complete their work while remaining optimistic about what the future will bring. 21CCCS wishes all the graduates success as they start on their next paths!
